Perhaps millions of women attempt to diagnose their possible yeast infection and then treat the condition on their own. Obviously, it seems, most or many women do not run into complications based on this self-treatment approach. Even though you may have been right this time, it was an irresponsible way to treat a yeast infection, and it could have led to bigger problems. There are many reasons it’s possible to make a misdiagnosis. You aren’t familiar with the various other conditions that have similar symptoms. Remember what they say about lawyers? “If you act as your own lawyer, you have a fool for a client.” This also pertains to people who act as their own doctors. There are other conditions that have “nonspecific” symptoms, or the symptoms are shared or are common with other medical conditions. That is why it is a wise choice to just see your doctor, or even go to the clinic if you are a college student, to get an accurate diagnosis and safe treatment. It’s good to know that remedies for this vaginal infection will not be comparable to remedies used for head lice treatment.

The best solution is to visit your doctor. This will give you the peace of mind of knowing that the treatment the doctor prescribes is correct for the situation he or she diagnosed. Otherwise, you are most likely taking a guess even if you have seen the symptoms before. In the case of vaginal infections, the symptoms could be caused by the Candida albicans fungus, or yeast, or it may be caused by something else equally unpleasant. You need to refrain from treating your infection incorrectly and perhaps causing more serious symptoms. And so you’ll have to go visit your clinic or doctor, with worse symptoms than you had originally.

Anti-fungal creams or vaginal suppositories may be used for yeast infection treatment. You can usually expect your yeast infection to disappear within approximately seven days. It bears repeating, because it’s so important – don’t try to diagnose and treat a yeast infection on your own during your pregnancy, but see your doctor immediately. And women aren’t that accurate at self-diagnosis. One study revealed that two thirds of the women who thought they had a yeast infection had a different type of infection. There are other conditions that produce similar symptoms, and even secondary conditions, such as vaginosis or vulvitis. Bacterial vaginosis is a serious condition caused by more than one type of bacteria. The protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis is responsible for an infection that exhibits symptoms that can be mistaken for the symptoms of a yeast infection, but are much more serious. A protozoan is a single-celled organism with animal-like behavior. Moreover, if you treat your vaginal infection with yeast infection medicines, and it is another form of sexually transmitted infection, your treatment will not work.

Boric acid capsules have been used many years as a natural home-remedy for a vaginal yeast infection. It’s a good choice to try if the antifungals you have been using haven’t worked well. However, one important word of caution for pregnant women is to “not” use these boric acid vaginal suppositories. It bears repeating: If you show any symptoms that appear to be the beginnings of a yeast infection, vaginal or otherwise, and you are pregnant – go to your OB/GYN immediately. On a related note, we urge you to consult your doctor, even though we reported on this alternative treatment, because an unresponsive condition may not be Candidiasis in the first place. You might diagnose yourself as having a yeast infection when, in fact, you have something else entirely. It seems that the more you try to educate yourself about the various treatments and symptoms of yeast infections, the more you come to realize that it’s a lot more complicated than it appears. There are times when a yeast infection clears up quickly and other times where it doesn’t seem to respond to the medication at all.

It’s important to be concerned if you have a yeast infection when you are pregnant, as we talked about previously. But there are other yeast infection situations that should concern you also – such as a suspected yeast infection in a baby or child. After visiting your doctor or clinic, you will be more in the position of making a correct self-diagnosis the next time the same symptoms occur.
