Arthritis Research Update
Are you one of the 40 million Americans (one in seven) suffering
from arthritis?. Arthritis is a group diseases, with degenerative
joint disease (DJD) being the most common. You may know from
personal experience that many of the medicines used to treat DJD
have significant drawbacks. Even worse, many arthritis sufferers
believe that they have to just live with the pain.
Nearly half of adults with osteoarthritis use alternative and
complementary therapies, with the most common being massage,
chiropractic, and alternative medications. 1 They have learned that
arthritis pain can be managed with activity and herbal and
alternative therapies.
Rule number one for the treatment of arthritis: Keep Moving.
Chiropractic care provides safe, effective
mobilization of joints. Exercise also helps you
keep moving. According to an article in the Archives of Internal
Medicine, Tai Chi is the most effective exercise for arthritis.
Herbal and nutritional supplements are valuable
tools. Scientific evidence support capsiaicin, chondroitin, and
glucosamine for the pain of osteoarthritis. Strong support exists
for gamma linolenic acid (GLA) for pain of rheumatoid arthritis
(RA). 2
Using a criteria developed by the American College of
Rhuematology, Doctors found that an herbal ointment showed
significant improvement in pain and stiffness for patients with hand
and knee osteoarthritis with regular use. 3
Researchers recommend that initial care for arthritis should
include chiropractic treatment and glucosamine sulfate. NSAIDs
(commonly used drugs, including aspirin, ibuprofen & Mortn)
should be discouraged due to their detrimental effects on joints and
organs. 4
